An Aqua lottery scratchcard win has made Peter Hayward of Newbridge £250,000 richer. Peter is 36 and works as a carpenter, and he had bought the Aqua lottery scratchcard from a local shop when buying his lunch. Initially he had asked for a different card, but the shopkeeper couldn’t get to it, so Peter opted for the Aqua one instead.
That simple deviation from his original plan had massive consequences - £250,000 worth of them! Peter didn’t discover those consequences immediately because he saved his lottery scratchcard until he had a break later in the day. When he scratched the game and realised that he had won the jackpot, he remained calm and later asked his mother to confirm that he wasn’t dreaming.
The father of a ten year old son, Peter has recently been living with his mother and stepfather, but the lottery scratchcard win now means that he can buy a property of his own. Being a carpenter, he knows the value of his work, and is intending to buy a home in need of renovation work that he can carry out himself.
“I have been a carpenter and site manager all of my life and the last few months have been extremely difficult for everyone in the trade. Winning this money couldn’t have come at a more perfect time for me,” Peter said.
“Things were difficult as work was slowing down, and rather than manage sites I was getting my hands dirty and working as a carpenter again,” Peter continued. “This win will make such a huge difference to my life and my family’s.”
Peter is a big fan of rugby, his son is just as big a fan of football, and both will benefit from Peter’s scratchcards windfall. “My son thought that I was joking when I told him that I had won,” he said, “so I hope to treat him to tickets to watch his favourite team, Chelsea, play and I really enjoy watching the Cardiff Blues, so I’m planning on getting along to the new stadium to watch them play next season.”
The lucky lottery winner also plans to buy himself a new car. “I’m torn at the moment between a BMW 3 Series or an Audi TTS,” he said. “I’ve already been window shopping and the thought that I can now buy something like that outright is amazing!”
