Lucky Player is Set For Life After Winning in Record Draw

Last Updated: Friday 10th July 2020, 11:55

A man from Kent is looking forward to an incredible future after banking the top prize of £10,000 a month for 30 years in Set For Life. He was the biggest winner in a draw on 15th June which turned out to be a record-breaker.

The winner played online and matched all five main numbers plus the Life Ball. He found out that he had won when he checked his emails, and has now claimed his prize from the National Lottery.

As an online winner, he was able to release some details through partial publicity, rather than having to go public with his full name or remain completely anonymous. He is known only as Mr L from Kent, and it has been revealed that he is keen to go on holiday as soon as it is safe to travel again.

Andy Carter, the National Lottery’s Senior Winners’ Advisor, said: “Huge congratulations to Mr L for winning this fantastic prize without even touching a ticket.”

Set For Life is an annuity lottery, unlike other games in the UK, so it offers a guarantee of regular payments over a long period of time rather than a one-off jackpot. Mr L will receive a total of £3.6 million over the course of the next three decades.

‘Lost’ Numbers

The second prize in Set For Life is £10,000 every month for a year, and there were 10 players who won in this category on 15th June.

This is the highest number of winners there has ever been in the second tier. In 137 other draws to have taken place since Set For Life launched, there has never been more than four winners in the Match 5 category.

The reason for the record number of winners has been linked to the TV series ‘Lost’. In the show, one of the characters, Hugo ‘Hurley’ Reyes, is a lottery winner. He played the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42, which become a central part of the show’s mythology.

Four of the numbers picked by ‘Hurley’ came up on 15th June, handsomely rewarding those players who had been inspired by Lost. As well as the 10 winners in the second tier, there were also 772 winners in the Match 4 category - more than double the amount in the same tier for any other draw in June.

Carter said: “Wow, the secret of the 15th June draw is finally revealed. It seems this TV show has consciously or subconsciously engrained these numbers into many of our players’ heads. Many people have lucky numbers and it seems that the traditional lucky 7 or birthdays route is being challenged by numbers from popular culture.”

Regardless of how you choose your numbers, you can take part in Set For Life draws every Monday and Thursday evening for the chance to win up to £10,000 a month for 30 years.
