The National Lottery has announced that it will start holding new Super Chance draws for its recently-launched Set For Life game, with the first scheduled to take place on Thursday 23rd May. These draws will slash the odds of winning the top prize of £10,000 a month for 30 years by awarding it to players who match one less number than is usually required.
Set For Life launched in March of this year as the first ever annuity lottery offered in the UK. Annuity lotteries differ from others in that the prize money is paid out over a period of time, rather than in one lump sum. In addition to the top prize in Set For Life of £10,000 a month for 30 years, there is a second prize of £10,000 a month for one year on offer in every normal draw.
To win the top prize in standard Set For Life draws, players must match five numbers between 1 and 47 and one ‘Life Ball’ between 1 and 10. In Super Chance draws, players will only have to match the five main numbers without the Life Ball to win that prize, dropping the odds of winning from around 1 in 15 million to 1 in 1.7 million. Anyone who matches five numbers plus the Life Ball in Super Chance draws will win the same prize.
If no one wins the top prize in a Super Chance draw, either by matching five numbers or five numbers plus the Life Ball, the following draw will also be a Super Chance draw, although the prize money will not roll over. This will continue until at least one lucky player wins £10,000 a month for 30 years.
Super Chance draws will be subject to prize capping if an exceptional number of ticket holders win the top prize.
The news will be welcomed by players frustrated that the National Lottery’s newest game is yet to see anyone take home the top prize. With the huge decrease in the odds required to do so and the fact that consecutive Super Chance draws will be held until there is a winner, it will not be long before that first big annuity prize is given away.
